Why Is Enfamil Newborn Discontinued?

Why Is Enfamil Newborn Discontinued?

Enfamil Newborn is discontinued since newer Enfamil products for infants have replaced it. There were also safety concerns regarding the product when an infant died in 2011, leading certain stores like Walmart to remove it from their shelves. And now, there are doubts about the brand's safety in general. If your child has consumed an Enfamil product, they could be at risk.

With free consultations and an affordable payment program, we have lawyers ready to meet with you.

Why Is Enfamil Potentially Dangerous for Babies?

Enfamil bases its formula on cow's milk. Research over the last ten years indicates that premature babies (those born before 37 full weeks of pregnancy) are more likely to contract Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC) than babies weaned on breast milk alone.

NEC is a serious disease that can lead to death. Symptoms include (but aren't limited to):

  • Sleep apnea
  • Reduced heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Diarrhea
  • Obstruction of the bowels
  • Constipation
  • Vomiting

What to Do If You Give Your Baby Enfamil

If you mistakenly give your baby Enfamil, don't panic. While it is not ideal, your child may not necessarily have a harmful reaction. You should, however, contact your child's doctor to discuss the situation and to find out if there are any concerns. Your doctor may want to monitor your baby closely for a period and can recommend switching to a different formula.

The Risk for Premature Infants

In 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) stated that premature babies should only consume human milk. So far, there hasn't been a recall on formulas designed for premature newborns, but that doesn't mean that they aren't at risk. In fact, due to a more vulnerable immune system, they are more at risk for NEC.

Mothers who can't breastfeed but don't want to use formulas will find that they can get pasteurized human milk through the Human Milk Banking Association of North America.

Safety First for Your Children

When it comes to baby formula, the most important element is safety. Formula manufacturers rigorously and continuously test these products to ensure they meet the strictest standards. But Enfamil seems to be cutting corners, and we're ready to hold them accountable.

Is It Safe to Change Formulas?

If you use Enfamil formula for your children, you might feel frustrated when their products are recalled or discontinued. Switching formula brands can be difficult on a baby's gastrointestinal system, especially as they adjust to the new formula. While the situation isn't ideal, the effects of using Enfamil products with your infant could be far worse—why risk it?

There are plenty of other formula brands on the market that can provide your child with the necessary nutrition without putting their health at risk. Do some research and find a formula that you feel comfortable using—your child will thank you for it.

Parents who have concerns about switching formulas or brands should contact their pediatricians for advice on making the switch safely.

Formula Safety Tips for Parents

When shopping for and using baby formula, here are a few things to remember:

  • Always check that it is within its expiration date.
  • Check the packaging and make sure that all seals are intact. If you suspect that there is something wrong, you should tell a staff member.
  • Only use the amount of water listed on the formula instructions.
  • Store your formula in a cool, dry place in your home.
  • Premade formula can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
  • If left unrefrigerated, the formula should be used within 2 hours of making it.
