How Much does the Enfamil Infant Formula Cost?

How Much does the Enfamil Infant Formula Cost?

Enfamil has traditionally been one of America's most popular infant formula brands—but it isn't cheap. Enfamil powdered infant formula has a price tag of about $30 per can, and some other Enfamil formula products cost much more. Parents who rely on formula as their baby's only form of nourishment may spend up to $2,000 to keep their baby adequately nourished in their first year alone.

Although some federal and state programs provide free or low-cost options to qualifying families, many parents still face rising formula costs. And when that formula causes harm to newborns and infants, some parents are stuck paying for the damages. If this has happened to you, Dolman Law Group is ready to help.

Are There Affordable Enfamil Alternatives?

If you are concerned about Enfamil costs and looking for a more affordable alternative, you're not alone. There are some more affordable options available. Several companies have introduced store-brand formulas to compete with big players like Enfamil and Similac in recent years. Some of these brands include:

  • Parent's Choice (Walmart)
  • Earth's Best (Target)
  • Kirkland Signature ProCare (Costco)
  • Member's Mark Advantage (Sam's Club)

While these store-brand formulas are not identical to name-brand formulas like Enfamil, they offer similar nutritional content at lower prices. For example, Parent's Choice infant formula (packaged in a 23.2 oz container) retails for around $9 at Walmart.

Meanwhile, a canister of Enfamil Infant Formula (21.1 oz) sells on Amazon for over $26—nearly three times as much.

What You Need to Know About Current Enfamil Lawsuits

Not only does Enfamil make parents pay financially, but it may also cost their children's health. In a mass-tort lawsuit filed on behalf of several children, parents allege that Enfamil misleads customers about potential side effects.

These suits claim that Mead Johnson (the company behind Enfamil) failed to warn consumers about the potential dangers of feeding cow-milk-based formulas to premature infants.

Reckitt, the company that owns Mead Johnson, has given an official statement refuting all charges in response to these allegations and lawsuits. It insists that Enfamil formula is safe.

While some baby formulas were recalled in March 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirms that none of the recalled products fall under the Enfamil brand.

Is Enfamil Formula Safe?

According to Mead Johnson, Enfamil contain several nutrients, including:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D, E, and K
  • Niacin
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Potassium

All such vitamins, minerals, and proteins give babies what they need most: nutrients that support mental and physical development.

While Enfamil contains several necessary nutrients for babies, it has also been blamed for causing dangerous side effects. According to Reviews in Obstetrics & Gynecology, baby formula such as Enfamil may cause:

  • Ear infections
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Lower respiratory tract infections, such as RSV, bronchitis, or pneumonia
  • Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC)

Symptoms from Enfamil Formula to Watch Out For

Of the potential side effects, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is typically the most serious. According to Cleveland Clinic, only about 80 percent of babies survive this disease, and many have long-term effects. Some children with NEC require antibiotics, feeding tubes, IV nutrition, an abdomen catheter, or surgery.

If your child has consumed Enfamil formula and experienced any of these symptoms of NEC, contact your pediatrician or take them to the emergency room immediately:

  • Vomiting green or yellow bile
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Bloody stool
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Extreme lethargy or irritability
  • Abnormal heart rate or breathing rate
  • Refusing food
