Yaz Birth Control Linked to Gallbladder Disease in Women

We have previously discussed some of the life-threatening risks associated with use of the popular birth control medication Yaz. Those include serious blood clots in the leg that can break free and travel to the heart or the brain through the blood stream. In its new location, the blood clot can cause heart attacks or strokes within its victims. To date, over 10,000 women have filed a lawsuit against Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Yaz’z manufacturer, claiming that the company either knew or should have known of the serious risks associated with the drug and failed to warn consumers of these dangers. To redress these claims, Bayer has set aside $1 billion to compensate women who have suffered Yaz’s side effects and the families of those women who were killed by the defective drug. Unfortunately, it seems that the dangers of Yaz do not end with blood clots, stroke, heart attack, and death.

As recently as March 2013, Bayer announced that it would set aside $24 million to compensate women who experienced gallbladder disease following their use of Yaz. Researchers believe that the higher occurrence of gallbladder disease (as well as the other serious side effects caused by the drug) is due to Yaz’s use of a new type of the hormone progestin. This hormone has undergone many chemical changes over the years in an attempt to take contraceptives from mere “birth control,” to include the treatment of common symptoms of PMS like cramping, bloating, acne, and irritability. The version of progestin that is the active ingredient in Yaz (called desogestrel) is exactly what has made Yaz one of the most prescribed brands of birth control in the world- and one of the most dangerous.

The exact correlation between Yaz and gallbladder disease is still unknown. Some researchers believe that the desogestrel causes an increase in the level of cholesterol produced by the body, which leads to a buildup of calcified bits of the excess cholesterol in the gallbladder. Other research has shown that the drug actually makes the gallbladder’s work more difficult by impeding the flow of bile through the organ. While research may still be unclear on what exactly causes this serious side effect, the research is clear that women who use birth controls containing desogestrel (like Yaz and NuvaRing) have a higher risk of developing gallbladder disease, which often requires painful surgery to remove the organ completely.

Of the $24 million Bayer has set aside to settle claims by the approximately 8,000 women who have filed lawsuits alleging gallbladder problems after using Yaz birth control, Bayer intends to pay $3000 to women who have had to undergo surgery to remove their bladder, and $2000 to women who suffered gallbladder disease without surgery. However, women who accept a settlement for gallbladder problems will not be allowed to collect from the pool of $1 billion that was set aside as settlement for blood clot victims.

If you have suffered from any of these serious side effects following the use of Yaz, or if you have lost a loved one as the result of using Yaz, you will likely be left with a laundry list of questions. You may be wondering if your injury was really caused by the defective drug, and why you were not made aware of the risk that Yaz could harm you. If you are one of the tens of thousands of women who have suffered both blood clot and gallbladder symptoms, you may need help navigating through your claims and deciding which settlement would be best for you.
