What Happened in the Blank Rome Data Breach?

The Blank Rome data breach on May 21, 2026, occurred when an unauthorized third party allegedly used social engineering tactics to gain access to sensitive personal information. Rather than directly hacking into Blank Rome’s network, the individual reportedly called a Blank Rome attorney, impersonated a member of the firm’s IT department, and convinced the attorney to upload files to an outside Google Drive account.

The Unauthorized Transfer Was Discovered Within Hours

Blank Rome says it discovered the unauthorized transfer approximately two hours later. The firm took the attorney’s device offline, deleted the transferred files from the outside Google Drive account, contacted law enforcement, and retained outside cybersecurity professionals to investigate the incident.

Personal Identifiable Information Was Discovered in the Transferred Files

By approximately May 28, 2026, Blank Rome determined that at least one of the transferred files contained personal information. The firm then reviewed the affected files to determine whose information was involved and what types of personal information had been exposed.

Notification Was Sent to Individuals Whose Information Was Exposed

Blank Rome subsequently notified the individuals it identified as affected by the breach. The firm’s investigation determined that the affected information included sensitive personal data, although the specific information involved varied from person to person.

The circumstances raise questions about the safeguards and procedures in place to protect sensitive information from this type of attack.

What Information Was Exposed in the Blank Rome Data Breach?

The Blank Rome data breach exposed names and Social Security numbers. Depending on the individual, the affected files may have contained several other types of sensitive personal, financial, and medical information.

According to Blank Rome’s June 26, 2026 data breach notice, potentially exposed information includes:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Home or mailing addresses
  • Email addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Taxpayer identification numbers
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • State identification card numbers
  • Passport numbers
  • Other government-issued identification numbers
  • Financial account numbers
  • Payment card information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

Not everyone affected by the breach had all of this information exposed. The data exposed depends on what information about a person was contained in the transferred files.

Is the Data Breach Letter From Blank Rome Legitimate?

Yes. Blank Rome LLP issued data breach notices following the May 21, 2026 security incident. The notice is dated June 26, 2026 and explains that an unauthorized third party impersonated a member of the firm’s IT department and convinced an attorney to upload files to an external Google Drive account.

A legitimate data breach can create opportunities for scammers to target affected people. Be cautious of unexpected calls, emails, or text messages asking for passwords, Social Security numbers, banking information, or payment in connection with the Blank Rome breach.

If you are unsure whether a communication is legitimate, use independently verified contact information rather than clicking a link or calling a number contained in an unexpected message.

Why Did I Receive a Blank Rome Data Breach Letter if I Wasn’t a Client?

If you were not a client of Blank Rome but received a data breach letter from them, it is because the firm discovered that personal information about you that was connected to one of their clients was exposed in one or more of the files involved in the May 2026 breach.

Why Were Blank Rome Data Breach Class Action Lawsuits Filed and Then Dismissed?

Three proposed class actions were filed against Blank Rome LLP in July 2026 over the May data breach. All three were voluntarily dismissed later that month, before a court ruled on the underlying claims.

Who Filed and What They Alleged

Laura Delapaz and Anthony Santana filed separate class actions on July 6, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Vincent Olmo filed a third the following day. All three alleged that Blank Rome failed to use reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect client data, exposing personal information belonging to more than 57,000 people.

Why the Cases Were Dismissed

Federal judges raised questions about whether the plaintiffs had established federal subject-matter jurisdiction and asked them to explain why the cases belonged in federal court. On July 21, 2026, all three plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed their claims rather than answer that question.

What the Dismissals Mean

The dismissals didn’t decide whether Blank Rome was liable. There’s no certified class or settlement, and individuals can still pursue their own claims. Dolman Law Group continues to investigate potential claims from people affected by the breach.

Who May Qualify for a Blank Rome Data Breach Lawsuit?

If Blank Rome sent you a data breach notice, the firm determined that your personal information was contained in one or more of the files involved in the May 2026 incident. That does not automatically mean you have a successful lawsuit, but it does establish that you were identified as someone affected by the breach.

Whether you may have a claim for compensation depends on several factors, including if you have experienced:

  • Fraudulent charges or transactions
  • Unauthorized activity involving a bank or financial account
  • Credit cards, loans, or other accounts opened in your name without permission
  • Identity theft
  • Fraudulent credit inquiries or damage to your credit
  • Tax or benefits fraud
  • Costs associated with responding to identity theft or fraud
  • Time spent disputing fraudulent accounts or transactions
  • Other financial losses connected to the misuse of your information

You do not need to wait until someone steals money from you to speak with a data breach lawyer. If your Social Security number or other sensitive information was exposed, an attorney can review your breach notice and circumstances and explain your legal rights and options.

Why Is the Exposure of Social Security Numbers So Serious?

Social Security numbers are especially valuable to identity thieves because, unlike a compromised credit card number, they generally cannot simply be canceled and replaced. Once exposed, a Social Security number can create an identity theft risk that lasts for years.

When combined with other personal information, such as a name, date of birth, address, or government identification number, a stolen Social Security number may be used to:

  • Open credit cards or other accounts in someone else’s name
  • Apply for loans or financing
  • Commit tax or government benefits fraud
  • Attempt to access existing financial accounts
  • Obtain services using another person’s identity
  • Combine information from multiple data breaches to build a more complete identity profile

This is particularly relevant to the Blank Rome breach because Social Security numbers were not the only sensitive information involved. Depending on the individual, the affected files may also have contained dates of birth, financial account information, driver’s license or passport numbers, and other information that could make identity fraud easier.

If you were a victim, you should not assume the risk is gone just because you haven’t seen suspicious activity. Stolen personal information can be retained and misused for months or even years after a breach.

What Should I Do If I Received a Blank Rome Data Breach Notice?

If you received a Blank Rome data breach notice, there are a few steps you can take immediately to help protect your identity.

Review and Keep Your Blank Rome Data Breach Letter

Review the data breach letter from Blank Rome carefully to understand exactly what personally identifiable data was exposed. Do not throw the notice away. The letter documents that Blank Rome identified your personal information as being involved in the May 2026 breach.

Keep the original notice along with any emails, credit monitoring alerts, fraud notices, or other correspondence you receive related to the incident.

Enroll in the Free Credit Monitoring

Blank Rome is offering affected individuals 12 months of complimentary Epiq Privacy Solutions ID credit monitoring.

The enrollment instructions and deadline are included in the breach notice. Credit monitoring can alert you to certain changes involving your credit file, but it cannot prevent every form of identity theft or fraud.

Regularly Monitor Your Credit Reports

Review your credit reports for accounts, credit inquiries, addresses, or other activity you do not recognize. Continue checking them periodically rather than assuming that no immediate suspicious activity means your information is safe.

Consider Freezing Your Credit

A credit freeze restricts access to your credit file and can make it more difficult for an identity thief to open a new account in your name. You can place and remove freezes with the three major credit bureaus at no cost.

You can also consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file, which tells potential creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity.

Monitor Your Bank and Credit Card Accounts

Review your bank, credit card, and other financial accounts for transactions you do not recognize. If you find unauthorized activity, contact the financial institution promptly and keep records of the transaction and your efforts to resolve it.

Document Any Identity Theft, Fraud, or Financial Loss

Save documentation showing any suspicious activity or losses you experience after the breach. This can include fraudulent transactions, credit monitoring alerts, correspondence with banks or creditors, costs you incur, and records of the time you spend trying to correct identity theft.

Speak With a Data Breach Lawyer

If Blank Rome notified you that your information was exposed, you can speak with a data breach lawyer about what the breach means for you and whether you may have a claim.

You do not need to wait for identity theft or financial fraud to occur before asking an attorney to review your situation.

What Compensation Could Be Available in a Blank Rome Data Breach Lawsuit?

Compensation in a potential Blank Rome data breach claim would depend on the harm each affected person experienced, the legal claims available, and the circumstances of the individual case. There is no established settlement amount or guaranteed payment at this time.

Depending on the circumstances, damages in a data breach claim may include compensation for:

  • Money lost through identity theft or fraud
  • Unauthorized charges that were not reimbursed
  • Costs associated with responding to identity theft
  • Credit monitoring or identity protection expenses
  • Time spent disputing fraudulent accounts and correcting credit problems
  • Other out-of-pocket expenses caused by the breach
  • Loss of privacy and other damages available under applicable law

Is There a Blank Rome Data Breach Settlement?

No. There is currently no Blank Rome data breach settlement, settlement claim form, or established payout amount. The three proposed class action lawsuits filed in July 2026 were voluntarily dismissed, and no court determined that affected individuals were entitled to compensation.

If a settlement is eventually reached, the amount available to individual class members could depend on factors such as the terms of the settlement, the type of information exposed, documented losses, and the number of valid claims submitted.

For now, anyone who received a Blank Rome breach notice should be cautious of websites or advertisements suggesting that a specific settlement payment is already available.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Blank Rome Data Breach

How many people were affected by the data breach at Blank Rome?

The breach affected 57,554 people, including some individuals who were not clients of Blank Rome.

What if my Social Security number was exposed, but I haven’t seen any suspicious activity?

You should still take the exposure seriously. Keep your breach notice, monitor your credit reports, and financial accounts, and consider freezing your credit. You can also enroll in the complimentary credit monitoring offered by Blank Rome. A Social Security number is generally not just canceled and replaced, and misuse may not occur immediately after a data breach.

Does receiving a data breach notice mean I can file a lawsuit?

Not necessarily, but if you received a data breach notice from Blank Rome LLP, it means they identified your personal information in the exposed files involved in the breach. Whether you may have a legal claim depends on factors such as the information exposed, any harm or losses you experienced, and the laws that apply to your situation.

Why did Blank Rome have my personal details if I was never a client?

Blank Rome maintained personal information in connection with its client matters, so you may have received a data breach notice even if you never hired or communicated with the firm. Your information may have been included in files maintained as part of another person’s legal matter.

Can I have a data breach legal claim if I haven’t experienced identity theft?

Potentially. You do not necessarily have to wait until someone misuses your information before speaking with an attorney. Whether you have a claim depends on the circumstances of the breach, the information involved, any harm you have experienced, and applicable law.

Does accepting Blank Rome’s offer for free credit monitoring affect my legal rights?

Accepting the complimentary credit monitoring offered by Blank Rome does not, by itself, determine whether you have a legal claim. Review any terms that accompany the monitoring service, particularly if you are asked to agree to additional terms or sign a release.

What should I do if I get a data breach notice from Blank Rome?

Keep the notice and review it carefully to determine what information Blank Rome identified as involved, and contact an attorney right away. Dolman Law Group can review what information was exposed, explain what it means for you, and help protect your legal rights before you decide on next steps.

Have Blank Rome data breach lawsuits already been filed?

Yes. Three proposed class action lawsuits were filed against Blank Rome LLP in July 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. All three were voluntarily dismissed on July 21, 2026, before the underlying allegations were decided.

Do the recent Blank Rome case dismissals affect my ability to file a claim?

No. The three earlier lawsuits were voluntarily dismissed over a jurisdiction question, not because a court ruled against the plaintiffs or found Blank Rome not liable. Individuals can still pursue their own claims.
