Mirena is a contraceptive device designed to be inserted into the uterus by a physician, where it stays implanted for up to five years. Approved by the FDA in 2000, Mirena quickly gained popularity as a contraceptive device due to the convenience of not being forced to think about daily or even monthly contraceptives, as well as the quick return to baseline fertility after the Mirena device is removed. Today, approximately 8.5% of American women use the device. You may recall Mirena television ads claiming that ideal candidates for Mirena have already had at least one child. As it turn out, there may be a very good reason for that disclaimer. Since its approval in 2000, the FDA has received over 45,000 reports of adverse effects of the device including vaginal bleeding, dislocation of the device and uterine perforation. When this occurs, the Mirena device can rip through the uterine wall and escape into different parts of the body, requiring surgery to remove the dangerous device. Additionally the tearing in the womb can increase the risks of miscarriage, should the women become pregnant following removal of the device. In addition to these serious side effects, the Mirena device can also cause ectopic pregnancy - a dangerous condition wherein the fetus attaches and grows outside of the uterus. This condition is life-threatening for the mother and requires removal of the fetus in order for the woman to survive.
