Is Viagra Causing Melanoma In Consumers?

Sildenafil, most commonly sold under the trade-name Viagra, is a medicinal pill which is taken to counteract erectile dysfunction. Although originally planned to be taken as a treatment for hypertension among other things, the unintentional discovery of its ability to cause erections in impotent male consumers was a jackpot for the division of Pfizer in England that originally formulated sildenafil. Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998 as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and became a top seller in a matter of months.

Pfizer was already an extremely well-established company before their release of Viagra, but their income has steadily increased substantially since the products release. Other notable products sold by Pfizer include Lipitor, a drug used to lower blood cholesterol, and Zoloft, a popular antidepressant.

While lawsuits filed against Big Pharma companies like Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson are plentiful, the grounds for a new class action may be in the works. Melanoma, a skin cancer considered to be the most dangerous, is being gradually linked as a side effect to Viagra. If treatment is sought early enough, melanoma can be cured with relative ease, but can quickly grow to become deadly if left untreated.

How strong is the correlation between Viagra and the Deadly Skin Cancer?

Research has been plentiful in the past months as new cases arrive and long-term Viagra users begin to notice negative health defects. A series of studies conducted by students of the Department of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School yielded some interesting results. According to the study results, users of sildenafil (Viagra) have a noticeably increased chance of developing melanoma. However, the medical researchers added that the results were insufficient to propose an alteration in the product’s labeling or clinical recommendations.

However, that study became more relevant when patients who were taking the pill as directed for years finally began noticing the unmentioned side effects. Edward Corboy Jr. has recently filed a lawsuit against Pfizer after taking the product regularly for 4 years when he noticed a mole on his neck which was later diagnosed as a cancerous tumor possibly related to his consumption of sildenafil.

And so the legal battle begins…

He blames the company for their “failure to adequately warn” him and other users that the product greatly increases the chance of developing melanoma. The main reason that a product liability case like this is strong in a court of law is the obvious negligence. If Corboy Jr. and/or other plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit (should it become a class action) can discover a way to prove that Pfizer knew or should have known about the correlation between their defective drug and melanoma, they may have a winning case in their hands.

In the event that the plaintiff is awarded, he can expect a fair amount of compensation for his medical bills. Mr. Corboy and other plaintiffs are also likely to be awarded punitive damages, which are put in place to financially “punish” a company for their negligent acts. Product liability cases in the pharmaceutical industry normally result in hefty financial compensation for consumers who suffer from losses. These cases involve all types of drugs, including Pfizer’s drug Lipitor.
