Polk County Deputy Killed in Car Crash

Earlier today in Bartow, Florida a deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office was killed in a single-vehicle crash. His police cruiser was discovered in a wooded area just off of Bomber Road. Master Deputy Sheriff Joseph “Shane” Robbins was found in his marked police cruiser after a resident of the area heard the crash and called 911. Several people in the area ran to the scene of the crash and attempted to assist Deputy Robbins but were unable to help him without the assistance of emergency personnel. Upon their arrival, Deputy Robbins was taken to Winter Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Deputy Robbins was 40 years old. He is survived by his wife and their five children.

During his 15 years on the force, Deputy Robbins received recognition for his good work 187 times, as well as receiving 14 commendations for his work in the special victims and homicide units. Our condolences go out both to Deputy Robbins’s family and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for the devastating loss of an outstanding officer. Investigators are asking anyone with any information regarding this accident to contact the Polk County Sheriff’s Office at 863-298-6200.

While the cause of the crash is still under investigation, residents in the area have identified the curve on Bomber Road as a dangerous spot that has caused several accidents over the past few years. According to resident Allen Turvin, “It’s just something about that curve that just pulls you in.” Turvin may be correct.

Even when a vehicle’s driver is following speed limit and observing all proper safety precautions, faulty road designs or flawed road construction may still cause dangerous conditions that can lead to serious accidents.

In some cases, the road itself may be poorly designed.  For example, a road may not be designed to allow for proper drainage. This allows water to puddle and sit on the road where it mixes with mud and oil, creating a dangerously slick surface. In other cases, the road may be designed with a shoulder that is too high off the ground. In these instances, the driver could make a small evasive maneuver that results in his/her tire getting caught on the high shoulder, causing a loss of control.

Other dangerous road conditions result when the road is properly designed but not appropriately constructed. In an effort to save money contractors may use substandard materials to build the road, or may not build the road to the specifications provided. In these instances, the road may not be able to support the weight of the hundreds of cars it carries each day. This strain can lead to road breakage or deep potholes which can cause serious accidents.
