On March 21, 2012, another pedestrian was struck by an automobile that lost control exiting Interstate 275 at the 38th avenue north exit in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is yet another avoidable Pinellas County pedestrian accident. The pedestrian was standing in the grass median and did nothing to contribute to the cause of the accident. In fact the driver of the automobile lost control, struck a pedestrian throwing him some distance and then the car continued to hit two metal road signs. As I write this article the pedestrian remains in critical condition at a St. Petersburg hospital.
Distracted Driving to Blame For Rise in Pedestrian Related Accidents
This is just the latest in a series of pedestrians that have been struck by automobiles in the Tampa Bay and particularly Pinellas County area. According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, the number of pedestrians struck by automobiles, motorcycles, and RV’s is on the rise. In my opinion, this is attributed to the amount of electronic gadgets and gizmos available today for personal use and utilized by the driver. Distracted drivers seem to be at an all time high. This is backed by the numerous studies of the dangers of “texting and driving” in which “texting and driving” is considered more dangerous than drinking and driving. A person looks away from the road for an average of 4 seconds while texting. At highway speeds the distance covered in that time is equivalent to a football field. Now factor in such distractions as navigation, radar detectors, satellite music, etc. Clearly the dangers of such devices are leading to more and more distractions for longer periods of time.
The significance of increased distracted driving is that pedestrians are not being seen and cars are travelling out of their lanes and often off the road. This is leading to more and more accidents. Even more troubling is the fact that injuries suffered by pedestrians at the hands of automobiles are usually serious. In the above story, the pedestrian remains in critical care at the hospital and his/her fate is unknown. A common injury is trauma to the head often ending up in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI is difficult for many doctors to diagnose and studies are limited as far as long lasting effects. Though PET Scans and new technology in MRI’s that includes such software packages as SWI, DTI, have aided in the diagnosis of brain injuries.
