GM Recalls Lawyer

October 29, 2014 | Attorney, Matthew Dolman
In early 2014, automotive giant General Motors (GM) issued a product recall for approximately 800,000 vehicles due to potentially defective ignition switches. Almost immediately, the National highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation, as officials suspected GM engineers and executive had known of the ignition defect for some time. NHTSA regulations require that an auto manufacture must notify the agency within five days of discovering a potential safety hazard, and must then issue a timely recall to repair or replace the defective component. Through its investigation, NHTSA uncovered evidence that GM employees had known of the dangerous ignition switch defect since 2004, but had failed to report it or issue a recall. As a result of this substantial violation of the law, the agency fine GM an unprecedented $35 million. In the following months, GM overhauled its safety department, terminated several employees responsible for the cover up, and recalled millions more vehicles due to the ignition problems and other potentially dangerous defects. Many of these recalls came too late, however, as many Americans were injured or killed in accidents caused by the defective vehicles. As a result, GM faces numerous lawsuits from injured parties and the number of lawsuits is only expected to grow. If you or a family member has suffered injury due to a GM vehicle defect, contact the experienced lawyers at the Dolman Law Group Accident Injury Lawyers, PA, today to find out how you can recover by filing a lawsuit.
