NuvaRing is a form of birth control designed to be inserted into the vagina once a month. The convenience of once-a-month birth control as opposed to daily oral contraceptives has caused NuvaRing to become one of the most popular forms of birth control in the world. NuvaRing contains a combination of two types of hormones: estrogen and progestin. Progestin has been modified over the years to go beyond mere “birth control” by helping to alleviate many monthly PMS symptoms including irritability, cramping, bloating, and acne. NuvaRing uses the third generation progestin- called desogestrel. This active ingredient has increased the risk of several life-threatening side effects including serious blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, and even death. Merk Pharmaceuticals, the drug's manufacturer, acknowledges these risks, but maintains that the risks are extremely low; even ta recent study published by the New England Journal of Medicine shows that the risk of blood clots with NuvaRing users is higher than with oral contraceptives. When a serious blood clot or heart attack does occur, Merk blames a multitude of other factors like the victim's lifestyle choices (like being inactive or overweight and/or smoking cigarettes) or genetic risk factors, instead of the drug itself. Merk has also claimed that studies conducted showing a link between the drug and occurrences of blood clot, stroke, or heart attack were conducted on too small a sample. To date, over 1000 women across the country have filed lawsuits against Merk claiming that they minimized the risks associated with NuvaRing by failing to properly warn consumers of the dangers of the drug. Included in those lawsuits are multiple wrongful death claims brought by the families of women who died as the result of a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the heart), deep vein thrombosis, or heart attack. If you or someone you know suffered blood clots, stroke, or cardiac complications following the use of NuvaRing, you may be entitled to recover for your injuries.
