How a Traumatic Brain Can Greatly Effect A Marriage

A recent New York Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/health/when-injuries-to-the-brain-tear-at-hearts.html?_r=2) penned by Sarah Wheaton goes into great detail illustrating the struggles and issues a marriage or family will face when one member has sustained a traumatic brain injury as a result of trauma. The article highlights the work of Dr. Jeffrey Kreutzer. Dr. Kreutzer; a Psychologist and Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, has developed counseling methods for marriages dealing with this very issue.  He has developed techniques and protocol for working with the non-injured member of the couple on adapting to a spouse whose personality has been significantly altered as a result of brain injury.

Marriage counseling catered to dealing with a traumatic brain injury is profound and innovative. Many marriages following such a life altering injury often resulted in divorce. The personality deviations are often far too great for the spouse to handle. The prevailing opinion in the medical community prior to the  recent work of Dr. Kreutzer was that a marriage was destined to fail following a closed head injury as the injured spouse often resembles an entirely different person.

Florida Brain Injury Attorney Focusing On The Family Not Just The Victim

As a Florida traumatic brain injury attorney, I not only focus on the impact that the closed head trauma has on my client but his family as well. I specifically note the issues that the non-injured spouse has and do everything in my power to document and maximize the damages associated with a consortium claim. Brain injuries are inherently difficult claims due to the expenses associated with litigating such expert laden cases along with the fine detail that goes into effectively presenting such a cause of action. Many law firms advertise or hold themselves out as brain injury advocates when in truth they often lack experience handling such a niche and fluid area of the law and medicine. At Dolman Law Group, we routinely handle closed head injury/brain injury claims throughout the State of Florida and have been retained by other lawyers to co-counsel such cases. If you have any questions concerning a head injury claim, please contact Dolman Law Group at: (727) 451-6900. – Matthew A. Dolman, Esq.
