Holding Catholic Clergy Accountable for Sexual Assault
The Catholic dioceses have seen more than their fair share of controversy in recent years over the continuing issue of clergy members that commit sexual assault against members of their congregation, oftentimes children. The pursuit of justice against those that would abuse their position of trust and power as a religious leader to take sexual advantage of people continues on with criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits against those whose negligence contributed to these crimes occurring such as the Catholic dioceses. What is most disturbing to know is that this pursuit of justice against members of the clergy that commit sexual assault is anything but new. Cases of sexual assault within the Catholic Church actually go back quite far and people have been fighting for restitution just as long with sexual assault lawsuits that have set the stage for future pursuit of restitution.
Florida Sexual Assault Lawsuits
When someone is sexually assaulted it can cause severe trauma that alters their lives for the worse. These damages can have a lasting effect by causing a general decline in quality of life and affect people’s careers, finances, and more. Those whose negligence contributed to a sexual assault occurring are liable for the damages they caused and as a result, can be the target of legal action such as a civil lawsuit.
Plaintiffs have the right to seek compensation for these damages caused by a sexual assault by filing a sexual assault lawsuit but doing so alone comes with the risk of reducing or even ruining one’s claim to compensation. The legal process when it comes to civil law, can be complex and negotiating a settlement with a defendant takes experience and specialized knowledge relating to these kinds of cases. Grand jury investigation of Catholic Church sexual abuse in Pennsylvania
From 2016 to 2018 a grand jury investigation of Catholic Church sexual abuse in the state of Pennsylvania was conducted. The investigation inquired into the history of sexual assault and abuse at the hands of members of the Catholic clergy in six Pennsylvania dioceses. This grand jury’s report on the investigation into the history of Catholic sexual abuse was released in August of 2018 and is considered to be one of the most important examinations into sexual abuse of children at the hands of Catholic church clergy in the United States.
The grand jury report showed that 301 Catholic priests were accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 children in the various dioceses that were investigated. Perhaps the most disturbing finding of the grand jury investigation was that the priests that had routinely sexually abused children were moved from parish to parish in order to avoid drawing attention that could cause a scandal.
This ultimately proved to worsen things for the Catholic Church since it made them liable for the actions of priests that should have been reported to the authorities but would now be able to commit further crimes. The grand jury also charged priests John T. Sweeney and David Lee Poulsonsince their abuse reports fell within the statute of limitations. As one would expect, hundreds of lawsuits were filed by people claiming to have suffered abuse because of the Catholic Church’s negligence.
Florida’s Catholic Sexual Assault Cases
Sexual assault by Catholic clergy members is a massive problem in the state of Florida as well. Our state has a long history of priests and other members of the Catholic church sexually abusing children. The Bishop Accountability Database that helps to gather information on accused Catholic clergymen across the country lists over 100 different members of the Catholic clergy that have been accused of sexually abusing members of their congregation. There are likely many more that are sexually assaulting children to this day and causing immense trauma to their victims. Those that have been sexually assaulted by these sexual predators as minors have come out and taken action as adults against the Church that has continually demonstrated an inability to root out a continuing problem of sexual assault of children among their members.
Continuing Investigation Into Florida Sexual Abuse by Catholic Clergy
Florida’s Attorney General has launched a statewide investigation after the revelation of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury report that was released last August. Many states have had their various dioceses release lists of priests credibly accused of sexual assault yeat many in Florida have chosen to wait until the conclusion of the investigation. Only time will tell what the investigation will turn up but rest assured that it is more than likely that there will be consequences for sexual predators within the Catholic church in terms of criminal prosecution as well as civil lawsuits.
