Holding Boy Scouts of America Responsible for Scout Leader Sexual Assault
Millions of young boys venture out on camping trips and club meetings every year with the Boy Scouts of America; a mainstay of American youth education when it comes to the outdoors and leadership. While the Boy Scouts of America has provided many young Americans with an environment where they can learn useful skills and make friends, there has been a sinister shadow that has been brought to light as time has gone on. The seemingly innocent extracurricular activity that millions of children participate in has been under intense scrutiny since many former boy scouts have come forward with testimonies of scout leaders and other staff of the organization sexually abusing children.
Sexual Assault Lawsuits and the Boyscouts of America
The Boy Scouts of America or BSA have developed a very negative reputation over the past few decades since many instances of sexual assault have come to light within the organization. Similar to how the Catholic Church has had members of the clergy take advantage of their position to target young boys for sexual abuse, the Boy Scouts of America has had many scout leaders use their position to prey on vulnerable boys. This unforgivable behavior has to lead to thousands of young boys ending up severely traumatized by the experience and has influenced their lives permanently.
The Boy Scouts of America has had many a lawsuit brought up against them to hold the organization responsible for any negligence that could have lead to the travesty of having young boys sexually assaulted by pedophiles in their employ. People that have suffered because of this organization’s negligence when it comes to negligent hiring of dangerous sexual predators, retention of these individuals, or other negligent actions in the face of sexual assault risk have the right to seek compensation for damages they have suffered through a sexual abuse claim. By proving this organization’s negligence lead to an individual’s sexual assault or abuse, that individual can hold them accountable for their actions and seek a settlement that can cover the damages they have suffered through their trauma.

Past Boyscout Sexual Abuse Lawsuits
Sexual abuse complaints against volunteer members of the boy scouts are not anything new. There were about 2,000 cases of sexual abuse reported to the Boy Scouts of America before 1994. When it comes to any organization that recruits volunteer staff to oversee children there is an immense risk of abuse occurring. After continued reports of sexual abuse issues regarding scout leaders and similar volunteer staff, the Boy Scouts of America implemented the Youth Protection Program yet there are still cases of sexual abuse to this day.
Lewis vs. Boy Scouts of America
One of the more notable lawsuits that have been filed against the Boy Scouts of America organization is the one in 2010 by Kerry Lewis in Multnomah County, Oregon. Kerry Lewis was a former member of the Boy Scouts of America as a child and alleged that his former scout leader, Timur Dykes, had abused him while he was a boy scout in the 1980s. It was actually found that Timur Dykes had admitted to one of his superiors in 1983 about how he had molested 17 boy scouts. Despite this admission of a heinous crime, Timur Dykes was still allowed to work within the Boy Scouts of America and then went on to sexually abuse a young Kerry Lewis.
The Boy Scouts of America had prior knowledge of a sexual predator in their employ and still allowed them to work within their organization which demonstrated extreme negligence when it came to ensuring the safety of the children that were left within their care. As a result, Kerry Lewis’s lawsuit against the Boy Scouts of America resulted in him being awarded $18.5 million dollars from the organization which is the largest punitive damages that have been awarded to a single plaintiff in a child abuse case in this country.
Boy Scout Files of Sexual Predators
As a result of the lawsuit involving Kerry Lewis, the Boy Scouts of America had to release their secret files that they had kept regarding the various sexual abuse reports that were filed over the years. The Boy Scouts of America had actually known of sexual abuse within the organization since the 1920s yet had done little to address the issue until outside pressure was applied. These files as well as what have been called the “ineligible volunteer” files have detailed severe negligence on the part of the BSA going back as far as the 1920s and as recent as 1985. To this day the BSA has not released files past 1985 which begs the question of how many sexual predators have been active within the Boy Scouts in recent years?
