Drinking and Driving: The Dangers of Holiday Driving

Holiday Parties, Mixers and Festivities! The Holidays are upon us and while everyone is excited to spend time with their families, (hopefully) have some days off of work and attend their favorite holiday bash, there are dangers with driving this time of year. You, as a responsible member of society, understand that you cannot drink excessive amounts of alcohol and drive home (or anywhere) at the end of the night. You understand that you either need to call a taxi or you need to keep your alcohol consumption in control. You, as a responsible member of society understand this concept. However, as your mother used to tell you, it’s not you that you should be concerned about. It’s the other drivers who may not have made the responsible decision to abstain from over drinking.

Keeping Yourself Safe

So what can you do to protect yourself this holiday season from the drunk drivers? First and foremost, be a defensive driver. Keep your cell phone in your pocket or purse and focus on the road. If you notice someone swerving or speeding past you, you can avoid them easier than if you had your eyes on your latest Facebook post or text message. It’s also important to know when these drivers are likely to be out and about. The later you are on the road the more likely you could run into some problems. If you decide that you have to leave a party at 2:00am, keep your eyes out for dangerous drivers. A way that you can protect yourself off of the road is to check you insurance coverage. Every insurance company has what is called, Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage. This coverage could cost you a few more dollars per month, but in the event of a catastrophe, it could greatly aid you and your family.

You’ve been hit by a drunk driver

Despite your attempts to keep yourself safe, you have been hit by a drunk driver. What now? The first thing you should do (if you are capable) is to gather as much information as you can. Make sure to take a picture of your vehicle and the other vehicle and keep the police report and any other relevant information. If you were rushed to the hospital, this information can easily be recovered, so it is not an issue.

Next, it is important to speak to an attorney. I like to compare finding an attorney to finding a best friend. It has to be a good fit for you and you have to feel comfortable with them. A great way to find a personal injury attorney is to seek one on Avvo. Avvo allows for former clients and other lawyers in the community to give the attorney either an endorsement or a rating based on their competency as a lawyer. I recommend Avvo primarily because I believe it is important to hear testimonial from past clients in order to gain insight into the way the attorney practices. It’s no surprise that all lawyers are not good lawyers.

Out of State or Out of the Area? No problem. If our firm can’t help you, we can recommend a competent and respected attorney in your area. The majority of the attorneys and staff at the Sibley Dolman Gipe Accident Injury Lawyers, PA are connected with various attorneys in different locations.
