Huff Post Exposé Of Alleged Risperdal Marketing Cover Up Set for Screen Journalist Steven Brill, who published an exposé about drug maker Johnson and Johnson, is ready to release an on screen adaptation. “Making of a Murderer” creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, are joining Smokehouse Pictures, a George Clooney and Grant Heslov collaboration, as directors in the venture along with writer producer Nicki Paluga. The 15 part Huffington Post series entitled “America's Most Admired Lawbreaker” written by Brill, brought into the forefront, Johnson & Johnson's alleged illegal promotion of Risperdal, an antipsychotic drug, to children and the elderly. Johnson and Johnson, and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, made over $30 billion in sales of the drug despite paying $2 billion in settlements regarding the cover up of detrimental side effects. Risperdal, or risperidone as it is known generically, received FDA approval to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and irritability associated with autism. It is also often prescribed off label for ADHD and Tourette's syndrome behavioral conditions. The series reveals the alleged illegal promotion of Risperdal to treat conditions in children and the elderly without warning of possible side effects. Risperdal was discovered to lead to the risk of death to elderly patients that had dementia. It was also discovered that adolescent boys who received Risperdal treatments were at risk of female breast development known as gynecomastia. Gynecomastia patients need to undergo a mastectomy to be returned to a normal male body. The psychological effects of breast growth followed by surgery on an already psychotic mind can be devastating. After paying $2 billion in settlements and penalties, Johnson and Johnson, along with Janssen Pharmaceutical, is still facing hundreds of lawsuits. As in the Huffington Post series, the screen adaptation of America's Most Beloved Lawbreaker, will focus on the success of the marketing of Risperdal as an antipsychotic drug, by the pharmaceutical giant, while allegedly violating FDA regulations by the manipulation and hiding of data regarding the drugs harmful side effects. There is no known release date of the screen adaptation to date. It has not yet been picked up by a network or streaming service, but the film makers are optimistic that the story will air in the near future.
